Taoyuan City Government and ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability work together as international leaders in sustainable freight and ecological logistics. Through sustainable urban freight planning, we make the urban environment more sustainable and livable.
EcoLogistics promotes clean, sustainable, efficient and safe urban freight through collaborative efforts in stakeholder engagement, technologies, policies and land use planning and inspires local governments to transform their urban freight system. Check out the 8 foundational principles local governments can follow to help lead the transition to sustainable urban freight.
Taoyuan, the most important international hub and gateway in Taiwan, is located in the northwestern part of the island. With a population of more than 2.2 million people averaging at 39 years old, the city is also known as the youngest.
As cities continue to grow, increasing urban freight movements present unique urban challenges including congestion, air pollution, traffic accidents, and a host of other negative impacts of city logistics. To mitigate the adverse impacts and meet the Paris climate goals, it is imperative for cities to apply sustainable principles for moving goods.
Achieving climate neutrality is one of the most ambitious goals that a government can undertake, yet it is one of the most critically needed to help the world stay below the 1.5 degree Celsius threshold. Those Daring Cities pursuing a target of climate neutrality must look beyond normal climate action planning measures, and integrate this approach and ambition into all aspects of their work.
Freight movement forms an invisible ecosystem that supports urban economies and communities. Freight transport makes up about 25 percent of traffic in cities but takes up 40 percent of road space and creates 40 percent of transport-related emissions. Freight traffic also disproportionally contributes to road accidents and pollution, imposing hardships on urban communities.
Join us to discuss trending solutions in the field of urban logistics, and the need to explore the sector which otherwise is neglected compared to passenger transport. The EcoLogistics Project has conducted studies in nine cities in Argentina, Colombia and India. Local government representatives will discuss the baseline status from these nine cities.
In this special edition of our bi-monthly newsletter, we are thrilled to launch the #EcoLogisticsPrinciples and would like to warmly encourage you to support this campaign. We are also happy to announce that our new website is up and running! Check us out at sustainablemobility.iclei.org.
In the meantime, I was transitioning out of my role and made an international house moving from Germany to Taiwan. Quite an extraordinary house moving experience in this strange time but all's well that ends well. The past three years working with ambitious cities and amazing colleagues like you were a genuine pleasure and I am proud to be part of the transformation of urban mobility in your city.
